Iridium is a precious metal 6 times harder and 8 times stronger than platinum, with a melting point 1,200 degrees higher than platinum and is a better conductor of electricity. Prior to Iridium, platinum had been favored for long life and performance because of its high melting point. Previously the technology didn’t exist to machine and bond iridium to a spark plug electrode in a cost effective manner. Industrial versions of the Iridium plug have been around for years and are still being sold for over a hundred dollars each.
Now the technology is available to effectively use iridium in a spark plug for automotive & motorcycle applications. The strength, hardness and high melting point of iridium allows NGK to manufacture the iridium ultra fine wire center electrode to 0.7mm. One of the finest firing points in the industry!
